¿Cuántas covers ha hecho Mike Portnoy a lo largo de su carrera?

El batería quiso retar a sus fans a confeccionar una lista de la que él mismo se sorprendió al tener casi mil canciones versionadas en su carrera.

Es indiscutible el hecho de que Mike Portnoy es uno de los baterías más influyentes que ha habido. Por una inmensa mayoría es conocido por haber formado parte de Dream Theater, pero no se quedó ahí la cosa: Liquid Tension Experiment, The Winery Dogs, Sons Of Apollo, Avenged Sevenfold o Adrenaline Mob son algunos de los proyectos en los que se ha volcado también.

Y cuando tienes tantos fans, surgen iniciativas como el foro que da cabida a más de 7.000 fans de Mike Portnoy alrededor del mundo. Un foro creado por y para los seguidores más fieles en Facebook, donde comentar noticias y todo tipo de temas en relación al batería.

Una cifra muy superior a lo esperado

Un buen día allá por 2018, el propio Mike retó a los participantes a hacer una lista de todas las covers que había hecho hasta la fecha (canciones que había tocado sin ser él el compositor de las mismas). Estimó que podrían ser alrededor de unas 500, una cifra que ya es una absoluta locura. Sin embargo, se quedó casi a la mitad de la cifra final.

Se sumaron más de 900 versiones listadas en un documento de 42 páginas, cada una perfectamente documentada con todo tipo de detalles: cada canción que ha versionado junto a su correspondiente banda original, además de la banda o músicos con quien la ha tocado, acompañada de la fecha y lugares donde ocurrió así como los álbumes en los que se incluye. Todo esto ordenado cronológicamente hasta julio de 2021. Desde luego que los fans de Mike Portnoy han hecho un trabajo meticuloso del que hasta él mismo se ha sorprendido.

Estas covers se reparte a lo largo de 36 años de carrera pues, aunque ahora en 2023 ya serían 38 años, la lista llega a julio de 2021. Es decir: tocaría a un total de 25 canciones por año, o lo que vienen siendo dos o más por mes desde que Mike comenzó su andanza musical. Seguramente, si la lista siguiese siendo actualizada, actualmente ya estaría cerca de las cuatro cifras en total.

Portnoy dice sí a los tributos

De esta recopilación se puede sacar mucha información interesante sobre el bateria. Como, por ejemplo, ¿de qué bandas ha hecho más covers? La respuesta no pillará por sorpresa a casi nadie: Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles y Rush, siendo esta última la opción más esperada ya que Neil Peart es su mayor influencia a la hora de tocar.  Aunque, siendo justos, la gran presencia de estas bandas se debe al hecho de que el propio Mike participó en tributos a estos músicos ya que son algunos de sus favoritos.

Pero hay más curiosidades: ¿con cuántas bandas ha hecho covers? Bien, pues a lo largo de esos 36 años de carrera que figuran en la lista han sido un total de 25 grupos o proyectos propios con los que se ha animado a versionar numerosas canciones. Y es que a Portnoy le encanta juntarse con otros músicos, ya sea de forma presencial en directo o en el estudio.

Incluso a distancia, pues participó en numerosos proyectos durante la cuarentena.
